This delicious and bone-warming Tisana de limón, menta y miel (lime, mint, and honey tisane) is grandma's traditional go-to solution for the sniffles. It is a comforting hot drink that will make chill and miserable days more bearable and just enjoyed for its lovely flavors.

Why we ❤️ it

This is a bone-warming tisana (Spanish for tisane) that my mom (and her mom before that) used to make for us when we inevitably brought any of a number of bugs from school. And while I am not an expert on the medicinal qualities of these plants (and they do have them), at least it tastes heavenly, and the steam relieves stuffy noses.

The refreshing mint (yerbabuena) flavor and the lemony flavor of the lime leaves make a lovely combination.

Dominican teas and tisanes

Even if you are perfectly fine, if you're a fan of herbal teas, you should incorporate our favorite Dominican teas and tisanes into your rotation.

Along with ginger tea, and lemongrass tea, this is one of my favorite Dominican drinks.

Serving suggestions

You can serve it as a nice soothing drink when needed, or even as a great substitution to coffee. Bring out some Dominican cookies, like Mantecaditos, Deditos de novia, or Coconetes to treat your guests.

Top tips

  • Leaves options: The ingredients for this tisana are reasonably easy to find, except-perhaps-lime leaves. You can also use lemon or orange leaves too. As a last resort, you can use 8 kaffir lime leaves [Amazon affiliate link] instead of the 12 the recipe calls for.
  • Star anise: I sometimes add a star anise because I love the aroma and taste, but it's fine without it. Expect it to have a more caramel color if you add star anise.
  • Storing: Leftover tea can be stored in the fridge and reheated just warm enough to your liking before serving again.

About this recipe

This was one of my mom's favorites, and I love it so much that I planted a lime tree at home just to have leaves whenever I felt like some of this tisane.

This recipe yields 4 servings of one cup each.

Ingredients

  • 12 lime leaves, or lemon tree, rinsed (see tips above the recipe)
  • 6 mint leaves
  • 1 star anise, (optional)
  • 1 lime, or lemon
  • 4 tablespoons Honey , (or sugar) to taste

Instructions
 

1. Boiling

  • Steeping mint leaves.
    In a deep saucepan (preferably stainless steel) heat 8 cups [2 liters] of water over medium heat until it comes to a gentle boil.
    Add the lime leaves, and mint leaves, and star anise. Simmer over very low heat until the water has reduced to half or has a light green color.

2. Serving

  • Tisana de limón, menta y miel (lime, mint and honey tisane).
    Remove from the heat and add the juice of the lime. Remove leaves.
    Sweeten with honey to taste (optional).
    Serve hot.
