Preparation
1. Peel
Using a potato peeler, peel the oranges, making the peel as thin as possible so that it does not include any white pith.⚠️ Use the oranges for something else; we will only be using the peel.
2. Steep
Mix the vodka and orange peels. Put it in a clean bottle and leave it in the refrigerator for 2 weeks.
3. Strain
Discard the peels and set aside the vodka.⚠️ If there are any solids, strain through a fine strainer or clean cotton cloth.
4. Make syrup
In a saucepan, combine ¼ cup of water and the sugar and simmer over low heat until it begins to change color. Immediately remove from heat and stir for a few seconds to lower the temperature.⚠️ The syrup should be golden in color, but if it darkens too quickly, transfer it to a cold saucepan.Add the still-warm syrup to the vodka and stir to combine.
5. Bottling
Pour into a clean bottle and let it sit in the refrigerator overnight.
6. Serving
Serve chilled.
Top tips
- Preparation time: Take into consideration that the preparation time does not include the two weeks for steeping.
- Peeling oranges: When peeling the orange, it's important to leave the white part out of the peels; it would add bitterness to the liqueur instead of the sweet orange taste we'd expect.
- Caramel: It is important not to let the caramel burn or harden, so keep a close eye on it.
- Storing: Once ready, you can keep it refrigerated for up to two months.
